At PointSixFour we pasture raise our chickens outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine. We raise all of our chickens in a mobile chicken pen called a “Chicken Tractor”. We move the pen daily to allow the chickens access to fresh grass, bugs and a clean place to lounge in the sun. We don’t confine our chickens indoors.
Many people do not know that chickens love grass and that grass can be up to 1/3 of a chickens diet. It is healthy for the chickens to receive a diverse diet of several different varieties of grass, weeds, seeds and bugs in addition to the vegetarian ration that we provide. Receiving a diverse diet means a more healthy and nutritious product for our customers.
Heritage Breeds
We raise old fashioned meat varieties that were popular prior to the 1950′s. These birds are very well adapted to being raised on pasture because of their excellent forageing ability. These birds are slower growing than modern varieties which allows them to develop wonderful flavor. These birds are a smaller than our modern broiler which makes them ideal for use in stews, soups and slow cooking.
Modern Broilers
We also raise the modern broilers that you have become accustomed to seeing in the grocery stores. Our chickens, however, are much different. These birds are raised outdoors on pasture. Our birds receive a diet that is much more diverse and natural than the chickens from the grocery store. The diversity in their diet, low stress environment and slower growth all result in a much healthier and tastier product. These chickens are larger with ample breast, legs and thighs. These are the perfect bird for the grill, deep fryer or smoker.
